Abstract

Cellulose acetate is printed or dyed, in the presence of a swelling agent, with an acid leuco vat prepared by reduction with thiourea dioxide (formamidine sulphinic acid). The cellulose acetate may be mixed with other fibres, e.g., cellulose fibres, and these other fibres will be dyed or not depending on the nature of the vat dye used and the nature and quantity of the swelling agent. In Examples, (1) cellulose acetate cloth is immersed in a dyebath made by reducing Caledon Yellow 5GS with thiourea dioxide and adding it to water, ethyl alcohol and acetic acid, rinsed and oxidized with acidified sodium nitrite; (2) cellulose acetate cloth is screen printed with a thickened composition including Ciba Bordeaux 2RN, thiourea dioxide, thiodiglycol and polyethylene glycol, steamed and oxidized with ammonia and hydrogen peroxide; (3) cellulose acetate cloth is roller printed with a thickened composition containing Caledon Printing Yellow GKS, thiourea dioxide, thiodiglycol and polyethylene glycol, steamed and oxidized with acidified sodium nitrite; (4) a cellulose acetate-viscose crepe fabric is printed with a paste including Ciba Red B Double Paste, Ciba Scarlet Micropaste G, thiourea dioxide, thiodiglycol, and polyethylene glycol, steamed and oxidized as in (3); (5) cellulose acetate fabric with a woven design of cotton is dyed in a bath obtained by reducing Caledon Brown R with thiourea dioxide and adding it to water, alcohol and acetic acid, rinsed and oxidized with acidified sodium nitrite to give an undyed pattern on a dyed ground; and (6) a cellulose acetate-viscose crepe is printed with a thickened composition containing Caledon Printing Jade Green XN200, Caledon Printing Yellow GKS, thiourea dioxide, thiodiglycol, urea and polyethylene glycol, steamed and oxidized as in (4). Other suitable vat dyes and swelling agents are specified. Specificatio 702,040 is referred to.
