Abstract

In making constructional or heat-insulating bricks, blocks, slabs &c. a porous light-weight, aggregate, produced by firing a clay, is coated with a slurried bonding agent and formed into the bricks &c. which are then fired in a furnace at a temperature high enough to bond the particles of aggregate together without causing them to flux completely, e.g. 1050 DEG C., the bonding agent being chemically stable at the firing temperature and present in an amount insufficient to fill the spaces between the particles of aggregate. Preferably, the volume of slurry used should not exceed 10 per cent. of that of the aggregate particles. The bonding agent may be a glaze or a clay which will fuse before the aggregate. A wetting agent may be incorporated in the slurry.
