Abstract

701,331. Batteries. AMERICAN FELT CO. June 20, 1951, No. 14583/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 53 [Also in Groups V and VIII] A corrugated separator for a storage battery consists of a sheet made by mixing cotton or other non-binder fibres with fibres of a thermoplastic material, carding the mixture and subjecting it to pressure at 280‹-310‹F. between cloth or canvas sheets in a platen press. Before the pressing operation the carded sheet may be treated with a resin emulsion of vinyl copolymers or polystyrene. The sheet is then passed between grooved rollers which are operated in such a manner as to produce slip between their surfaces and the sheet whereby sufficient heat is produced by friction to soften the thermoplastic fibres. The sheet cools as it leaves the rollers and the corrugated form is retained. To produce the necessary friction the rollers may be driven at different peripheral speeds at the point of contact with the sheet. Loss of porosity of the separator when in use due to the deposition in its pores of the active material of the electrodes is compensated by the gradual disintegration of the cotton fibres by the electrolyte.
