Abstract
The reduction of heat conductivity in a burner plate in order to minimize back firing is attained by providing cavities therein, either by partial sintering of the refractory forming the plate or by merely drying the refractory, or by the addition of a gas producing substance, or by burning out combustible matter. Alternatively, heat restraining materials, e.g. kieselguhr or asbestos powder, may be added to the raw refractory, or the radiation from the plate can be increased by adding the oxides of iron, manganese, cobalt or chromium. Zirconia and ceria may also be present. Dry refractory material is rendered plastic by admixture with oil and water and pressed to the desired shape. Specified refractories are clay and metal silicates.
