Abstract

A maroon pigment of approximate composition K2 Cu Fe (CN)6 is produced by reacting, at a temperature of 75 DEG C to boiling, an aqueous solution containing 20-30 per cent. copper sulphate pentahydrate with an aqueous solution containing 20-30 per cent potassium ferrocyanide trihydrate while maintaining a stoichiometric excess of ferrocyanide. The copper sulphate solution is added slowly to the ferrocyanide solution which is heated and stirred, and the pigment is removed by filtration. The pigment may be subsequently washed with hot water and dried at 180 DEG C. The pigment is characterized by a particle size of 0.03-0.5 micron, with substantial absence of particles below 0.03 micron in size, and a reflectance in linseed oil films of above 70 per cent at 700 millimicrons about 30 per cent. at 400 millimicrons, and 10 per cent at the wavelength of maximum absorption
