Abstract
Transparent films of synthetic polymers such as cellulose acetate and vinyl type resins are flameproofed by using as a plasticiser in the film-forming liquid a brominated monomeric phosphoric acid compound made by bromination of an alkene phosphate of formula <FORM:0700292/IV(a)/1> where R is an unsaturated radicle of 3-5 C atoms and X is ONH4 or OR. Brominated triallyl phosphate is mentioned as a particularly suitable compound. Solutions or emulsions of the brominated monomer are used in flameproofing textiles (see Group VIII) and may contain a vinyl resin binder. In Examples (3) triallyl phosphate in aqueous emulsion with polyvinyl alcohol and calcium carbonate is treated with bromine in benzene; (4) triallyl phosphate in aqueous emulsion with polyvinyl alcohol is partially brominated by treatment with bromine in benzene; (5) a hexabromo triallyl phosphate is admixed in methyl ethyl ketone with a vinyl resin e.g. a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer containing about 80 per cent. of vinyl chloride and in (6) transparent films are made from a composition containing the ingredients of (5).ALSO:Alkene phosphates of formula <FORM:0700292/IV(b)/1> wherein R is an unsaturated aliphatic radicle of 3-5 C atoms and X is O.NH4 or OR are brominated when dissolved in a solvent or dispersed in a non-solvent medium. Brominated alkene phosphate monomers are obtained. The products are used in flame-proofing (see Group VIII). In examples triallyl phosphate is (1) and (5) brominated in benzene, (2) partially brominated to the equivalent of dibromo-triallyl phosphate and (3) and (4) brominated and partially brominated respectively in an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl alcohol and in (7) diallyl ammonium phosphate is brominated in aqueous solution to give tetra bromo diallyl ammonium phosphate. Specification 688,372 is referred to.
