Abstract
700,261. Two-part couplings; lampholders. GILBERT, C. E. Oct. 23, 1951 [Nov, 10, 1950], No. 24747/51. Class 38 (1). A plug or socket connector comprises a hollow insulating body slidably embraced by a cover which presses a cable into engagement with means on contacts in the body adapted to pierce the insulation of the cable and contact the conductors thereof. Figs. 1 and 2 show a plug in which the body 21 is rectangular and has internal partitions 37 ... 39, partition 38 being pointed at its upper end to locate the conductors of a twin-core cable 62 adjacent the side walls of the body, said cable entering the body through an aperture 46 in one end wall and being laid longitudinally of the body so as to be positioned above the inner ends of blade contacts 23, 24 located in holes 42, 43 adjacent partitions 37, 39 said contacts being retained in the body by lugs 29 bent over the partitions. Said inert ends of the contacts have points 31 thereon which pierce the cable when the cover 22 is slid into position, projections 58 on the cover engaging the cable. The cover also forms a kink 63 in the cable adjacent aperture to prevent tension being applied directly to the contact-engaging portions of the cable. In a modified plug, Fig. 13, the body 21 is T-shaped, the arms of the T being engaged by the cover 22. Figs. 14 and 15 show a socket for connection at any point along a cable in which the rectangular body 81 has a longitudinal cable-receiving channel 86 in its base into which open slots 87, 88 in recesses in which, blade contacts 83, 84 are located, said contacts having off-set pin-engaging portions and prongs 102 on their inner ends which project into channel 86 and are adapted to pierce the cable insulation when the channelshaped cover 82 is slid over the body. In another embodiment, Figs. 18 and 19, also for connection at any point along a cable, the body 214 has a cylindrical portion threaded at 215 to receive a lamp, and a square base portion which is T-shaped in cross-section. Blade contacts 216, 217 are located in recesses in the body and are bent to engage the lamp contacts, their inner ends projecting into a transverse cable-receiving channel 229 in the base of the body and having prongs 218, 219 thereon adapted to pierce the cable insulation when the cover 228 is slid over the T-shaped base.
