Abstract

Organic non-ionic polymers containing phosphorus and halogen are made by partially polymerizing and then halogenating, or alternatively first halogenating and then polymerizing a dialkene amido phosphate of the formula <FORM:0699951/IV (a)/1> where Ru is an unsaturated aliphatic radical having 3 to 5 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen, an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical of 1 to 3 carbon atoms or an unsaturated aliphatic radical of 3 to 5 carbon atoms, R2 is an unsaturated aliphatic radical of 3 to 5 carbon atoms or the radical <FORM:0699951/IV (a)/2> where m is 1 to 5. Specified monomers are N-allyl, diallyl-, N-diallyl, diallyl-, and N-methylol diallyl, phosphonamides, N,N1-methylene- and N,N1-ethylene bis amido diallyl phosphates. Halogenation and polymerization in bulk, solution, emulsion and using the pearl technique may be effected as described in the parent Specification. In examples N-methylol diallyl phosphonamide N,N1-methylene bis amido diallyl phosphate, or N,N1-ethylene bis amido diallyl phosphate is refluxed in isopropanol using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst and, prior to gelation, the high polymer fraction is precipitated with cyclohexane, naphtha or carbon tetrachloride, redissolved in methanol and reprecipitated with carbon tetrachloride. Bromine or chlorine is then added to a solution of the polymer in a methanol-ethylene dichloride mixture, the solution neutralized with ammonia and precipitated with naphtha or carbon tetrachloride. The products may be viscous oils, soluble and thermoplastic resins or insoluble infusible resins and may be used as plasticizers, water- and flame-proofing agents, hydraulic fluids, corrosion inhibitors insecticides and fungicides, lubricating oil modifiers, coatings and laminating resins.
