Abstract
699,636. Coal cutting chains. PROCTOR, S. E., and HOY & CO., Ltd., A. March 16, 1951 [Dec. 16, 1949], No. 32382/49. Class 68(i) [Also in Group XXV] In a coal cutting chain comprising links connected by ball and socket joints, each ball is provided with a shank which extends towards the next link of the chain and each socket consists of a recess, extending inwardly from a lateral face of the link which carries it, and connected by a slot with the end of the link to permit assembly of each ball in the socket of the next link by passing the shank through the slot, the recess being closed by a plug which fits it outside the ball. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, each link is formed of cylindrical ears 12, 13, which fit in the hollows between the teeth 14 of the sprocket 15, bridged by a portion 16 and a web 17, which lies in a space between the two side portions forming each tooth. Each ear is drilled out as at 18 forming sockets to accommodate the ball members 20 which have connecting shanks 19 passing through slots 21 beside the sockets 18. When the ball members 20 have been inserted, the sockets 18 are stopped by plugs 22 retained by peening over the metal ears or by light welding. The sockets are also machined with slots 23, 24 and 25 to permit the chain to bend. The cusps 26 formed by the slots provide increased bearing surface for the balls. The picks are carried by bosses 30 and the links also carry projections 33, 34 which engage in the guides of a chain jib. In another form, Fig. 4, the sprocket has teeth only between the pick-carrying links and each link is formed by two end socket portions 42, 43 of case-hardened steel which have abutting T-shaped projections 44, 45 extending upwardly from the base of the link. A roof portion 47 of the pick-carrying boss fits over the projections 44, 45 and the whole is retained by a rivet 48: In other similar forms, the abutting projections are of dovetail section, extending upwardly or transversely across the link.
