Abstract

699,404. Ice-making. FRENCH, A. A., and McGREGOR, A. N. Nov. 28, 1950 [Dec. 16, 1949], No. 32323/49. Class 29. Moulds 14 for freezing water-ice confections, or metal sheaths into which the moulds fit, have evaporator pipes 36, 38, 40, 42 in metallic contact with their outside surfaces and supplied by a refrigerating unit 21, 23 including an automatic expansion valve 30, and the frozen confections are stored in a vessel 13 with cooling pipes 50 supplied with refrigerant through a constant pressure valve 52. The expansion valve may be by-passed whereby warm refrigerant is supplied to the freezing pipes for thawing, a direct return line 44 being provided from the freezing pipes to the intake of the compressor 21. The cabinet has two insulated compartments 12, 13 for the moulds and for storing the frozen confections respectively and a pipe 27 from the refrigerant receiver 20 connects with branch pipes 28, 29 with expansion valves 30, 52 connected by pipes 32, 51 with the evaporator pipes on the moulds 14 and the evaporator coil 50 cooling the storage compartment 13. A non return valve 53 is provided in the return pipe 54 from the coil 50. The pipe 32 branches into two pipes 33, 34 leading to the outer sides of the two outer moulds where each pipe is bent to sinuous form at 36 and soldered to the mould, this pipe continues at 37 to a coil 38 soldered to one side of the next mould and so on as at 39-42 and returns to the return line 44 by a pipe 43. Similarly the other branch pipe 34 connects to sinuous pipes soldered to the other sides of the moulds and lead's back to the return line by a pipe 45. For thawing, a by-pass pipe 55 with a valve 56 leads from the compressor 21 to the pipe 32. When the valve 56 is open the pressure closes the valves 30, 52. Alternatively a valved by-pass may be provided across the expansion valve 30. The evaporator pipes may be brazed to the undersides of the moulds, and the coil 50 cooling the storage compartment may be immersed a eutectic in a jacket 67.
