The invention comprises pyridine-3 : 5-dicarboxylic acid amides of the general formula <FORM:0698965/IV (b)/1> (wherein R1 represents hydrogen, R2 and R3 represent alkyl radicals in which the hydrogen atoms may be replaced by aryl or dialkylamino groups, or R2 may also be hydrogen, and R4 represents hydrogen or an alkyl group, or R3 and R4 together represent a cycloalkylene chain which may be interrupted by an oxygen or sulphur atom or an >N-alkyl group); the manufacture of symmetrical amides covered by the general formula by reacting a dihalide, the diazide or the dimethyl or diethyl ester of pyridine-3 : 5-dicarboxylic acid with an amine of the general formula <FORM:0698965/IV (b)/2> and the manufacture of the unsymmetrical amides of the foregoing general formula by reacting a halide, azide or methyl or ethyl ester of a pyridine-3 : 5-dicarboxylic acid monoamide of the general formula <FORM:0698965/IV (b)/3> with an amine NHR3R4, or a halide, azide or methyl or ethyl ester of a pyridine-3 : 5-dicarboxylic acid monoamide of the general formula <FORM:0698965/IV (b)/4> with an amine NHR1R2. The products possess valuable pharmacological properties. Examples describe the preparation of pyridine-3 : 5-dicarboxylic acid 3-amido-5-diethylamide, 5-morpholido-, 5-piperidido-, 5-(21-methylpiperidido)-, 5-(N1-isopropylpiperazido)- and 5-(21-diethylaminoethyl) - amido - 3 - amide, 3 - amido - 5 - (21 : 21 : 21 - tributylethyl) - amide and - 5 - (11 : 21 - diphenylethyl) - amide, 3 -(21 - diethylaminoethyl) - amido - 5 - (111 : 211 - di - phenylethyl)-amide and bis-(11 : 21-diphenylethyl)-amide.
