In a hatch cover comprising a panel or at least a pair of pivotally joined panels, the panel or one of said pair of panels being hingedly connected to the frame of the hatch opening, and said pair of panels having rollers bearing on a structure extending along two opposite sides of said opening, each panel comprises sealing strips 52, 53 and 55 of resilient material disposed respectively along two upper parallel horizontal edges, along two lower parallel horizontal edges. perpendicular to said upper edges, and along four parallel vertical edges of the panel, so as to provide a continuous liquid seal around the panel when the latter is closed, while gutters 57 extends below the upper strips 52 for collecting liquid which may leak therethrough, and ducts are provided to discharge the liquid colled by said gutters or leaking past the lower strips 53. Vertical plates 59 disposed one at each end of a gutter 57 directs liquid from the latter into lower gutters formed by the edges of the panel and flanges upstanding from opposite edges of the hatch opening, the lower gutters being drained by pipes 62. The sealing strips may be made of sponge rubber or of greased strands, and they may be hollow and capable of being inflated. Rollers 45 supporting the panels are arranged to be raised or lowered with respect to the latter to provide for seating of the strips 53.
