Abstract
Dry alimentary and medicinal preparations intended to be dissolved immediately before use and containing swelling substances which tend to agglutinate upon addition of water are made by adding a crystallizable, readily water-soluble substance such as a sugar, a salt, citric acid or urea to an aqueous solution of the swelling substance and subjecting the solution to freeze-drying. Combinations of vitamins or hormones with polyvinyl pyrrolidone, and the suitability of sucrose, glucose or sorbite in preparations for parenteral application are referred to. Examples are concerned with freeze-drying a 2 1/2 per cent aqueous gelatine solution with an addition of 4 per cent of sucrose, calculated on the weight of the solution, and a 2 1/2 per cent aqueous gelatine solution with an addition of 5 per cent of sodium chloride, calculated on the weight of the solution, and the freeze-drying, in ampoules containing 2.6 ml., of an aqueous solution of 25,000 I.U. of the hormone of the anterior pituitary gland, 2.5 g. of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and 4.5 g. of sucrose per 100 ml., and in ampoules containing 1.5 ml., of an aqueous solution of 10,000 units of the circulatory hormone callicrein, 9 g. of sucrose and 5 g. of polyvinyl pyrrolidone per 100 ml.
