698,495. Valves; ports and passages. LEYLAND MOTORS, Ltd., and TATTERSALL, N. Oct. 12, 1951 [Oct. 12, 1950]. No. 24968/50. Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi). In an engine cylinder head 2 having an inlet valve seating 5 near the periphery of the cylinder and an inlet channel 6 leading to the seating, the projection in the direction of the cylinder axis of the channel 6 upon the inner face of the head 2 being inclined at a right angle or larger angle to a radial line from the cylinder axis to the centre of the valve seating, it is arranged that the wall of the channel 6 next the inner surface of the head extends over the seating for a distance less than half the radius of the seating and terminates in a straight or curved lip 7 which makes an acute angle with the projection of the channel mid-line on the side next the cylinder axis. The air or air/fuel mixture entering the cylinder is caused to swirl both by the approximately tangential entry of the channel into the cylinder and the lip 7.
