698,351. Heel-attaching machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., JAMES, C. H., and LUTYENS, J. L. Jan. 2, 1952 [Jan. 3, 1951], No. 209/51. Class 17 (i). [Also in Groups VIII and XXIV] In a heel attaching machine, similar to that described in Specification 23031/11, [Class 17 (i)], in which a rod 156 is connected to a heel abutment device 164 by a linkage, the rod 156 is raised by a power means (see Group XXIV). A continuously rotating input member, driven by a belt 198, is surrounded by a friction band 222 which is engaged therewith by a pedal 170 acting on a chain 258 and which is connected to an output member acting, through a chain 260, on a lever 152 to which the rod 156 is pivoted at 154. The pedal 170 is pivoted on a lever 140 which is moved downwardly by a link 150 as the rod moves upwardly. Springs 168 return the lever 140 to its inoperative position. At the end of its travel the pedal 170 is arranged to trip a clutch (not shown) which actuates the naildriving mechanism of the machine (also not shown).
