Abstract
Hydrocarbons heavier than gasoline are partially desulphurized by subjecting them to solvent extraction with about 0.1-2 volumes (based on the hydrocarbons) of liquid hydrogen fluoride at about 50-150 DEG F, and the raffinate is employed as feedstock in a catalytic cracking process employing a silica-alumina catalyst. The raffinate has substantially the same 10-80 per cent distillation temperatures as the original hydrocarbons, contains only those sulphur compounds which are not readily adsorbed on the silica-alumina catalyst, and yields, on cracking, a gasoline of low sulphur content with minimum formation of coke. The solvent extraction may also remove other objectionable components such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, while traces of HF present in the raffinate serve to activate the silica-alumina catalyst. According to a modification of the process, the solvent extraction may be carried out at about 150-400 DEG F, whereby at least a portion of the sulphur compounds is converted into hydrogen sulphide. In examples, West Texas gas oil is subjected to the process, using Shper Filtrol ("Filtrol" being a Registered Trade Mark) as the silica-alumina catalyst. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
