Abstract

698,124. Making wheel hubs. PHILLIPS & CO., Ltd., J. A. Jan. 16, 1952 [Jan. 30, 1951], No. 2267/51. Class 83 (ii). A cycle wheel hub shell is made in two parts, each formed as a pressing from a flat metal blank by a series of successive shaping opera. tions in which a tubular end part is formed the open end of which is provided with an outwardly directed flange, the other end of said part, being pierced and the pierced ends of the parts are axially aligned and welded together to form a unitary hub shell the flanges of the two parts providing spoke supports. A circular sheet metal blank 20 is first pressed into a shallow cup-shaped pressing 21 which, after deepening in press tools, is formed with an outwardly bent marginal portion 27 in a press tool 25. The peripheral edge of the marginal portion is then curved outwards to form a lip 28, Fig. 6, and the depth of the pressing increased to form a pressing 29. The lip 28 is flattened into a flange 31 inclined to the body of the pressing and the internal diameter of the bulged portion 27 is increased. The closed rounded base of the pressing is then flattened and the inclined flange 31 bent normal to the body to form a pressing 33. The flattened base is then pierced and spoke holes 35 provided in the flange 31. In an alternative form of end part, Fig. 11, the body 38 is longitudinally tapered from the bulged portion 27 to the pierced end 34. An end part having a ridged flange is formed by bending the flange 31 so that it inclines downwardly and then upsetting the flange and bulged portion 27 so that the flange extends outwardly normal to the axis of the end part and an upstanding ridge 39 is formed at the junction of the flange and the bulged portion 27, Fig. 15. The pierced ends of two completed end parts are butt-welded together to form a hub shell and the bulged portions 27 receive ball race cups 42. The hub shells are finally polished or plated and provided with an oil hole 44, Fig. 16.
