Abstract
Hot-worked cast iron articles, having tensile strengths in excess of 100,000 pounds per square inch and having free carbon in the form of flattened nodular graphite, are characterized by the following composition:-C 2.5-4.3 per cent, Mn 0.15-3.0 per cent, S 0.008-0.09 per cent, P 0.02-0.1 per cent, Si 1.9-3.5 per cent, Ce or Mg or both 0.03-0.2 per cent, Fe the remainder. The cast iron may also contain one or both of Ni and Co up to 20.0 per cent and Zr 0.02-0.75 per cent. The cast iron should be preheated to 700 DEG C-760 DEG C before being placed in the forging furnace prior to hot working within the temperature range 900 DEG C-1075 DEG C. Heating should be carried out slowly with long holding times. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 630,070, 636,579, 645,862 and 649,946.
