Abstract

Compositions for rendering paper or paperboard non-adherent to normally adherent materials comprise solutions or aqueous emulsions of polysiloxanes of the general formula <FORM:0697240/IV (a)/1> , wherein a is from 1.0 to 1.5, b is from 0.75 to 1.25 and a+b is from 2.0 to 2.5, which have been end-blocked with trimethylsiloxy groups. The siloxanes used are linear copolymers, and may contain traces of hydroxyl radicals. For treating the materials in the examples, an emulsion of the polysiloxane is made by adding it, with agitation, to an aqueous solution of a higher aliphatic alcohol sulphate, and after dilution with water and stabilization by addition of acetic acid, the emulsion is then mixed with an emulsion made by mixing a naphtha solution of zinc 2-ethyl-hexoate, iron octoate or lead naphthenate with a higher aliphatic alcohol sulphate and water. Other catalysts specified are zinc, lead, iron, copper, aluminium, magnesium, cadmium, cobalt, nickel and sodium octoates, acetates, hexoates, oleates, stearates, naphthenates, laurates and resinates, and sodium bicarbonate and aluminate. Other solvents specified are hexane, toluene, carbon tetrachloride, ethanol, ether and dioxane. Quarternary salts may also be used as emulsifiers.ALSO:Paper coated with a methylhydrogen polysiloxane (see Group IV (a)) is used: - (a) for providing cigarettes with non-wetting tips which do not adhere to the smokers' lips; and (b) in making containers for making partially baked breads, such as buns, rolls and sweet rolls, which the consumer finishes by a few minutes' baking just prior to actual consumption. The finished products do not adhere to these containers.
