697,069. Valves. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Dec. 10, 1951 [Dec. 19, 1950], No. 28906/51. Class 135 [Also in Group XI] Apparatus for evacuating hollow articles, e.g., electric bulbs, comprises a valve 11, Fig. 4, arranged between a pipe 12 connected to the article and a vacuum line 28, and having a sealing member 19 normally resting on a shelf 18 in a chamber 16 and adapted in response to an abnormal flow of gas, e.g., due to a leak in the article, to seal the vacuum ' line from the chamber. A bulb 9, Fig. 2, registers with an exhaust head 6 connected to the valve 11 on a rotating turret 1. The valve passes under magnets 34 which lift the magnetic ball 19 or a rubber ball filled with metal filings from a seat 37 to the top of the chamber while a rough vacuum pump is coupled to the line 28. When the valve 11 passes from beneath the magnets, the ball drops on to the shelf and a fine exhaust is applied to the line 28. If now a leak develops in the tube 9, the rush of air through the connection 12 blows the ball up the shelf until it drops on the seat 37.
