Abstract

697,037. Crank-case relief valves. TRICO PRODUCTS CORPORATION. April 6, 1951 [April 8, 1950], No. 8060/51. Class 7 (ii) [Also in Group XXVIII] In a motor vehicle internal-combustion engine, the crankcase of which is ventilated by an airstream, a filter-through which the airstream passes, comprising a porous filter body 34, Fig. 2 of a circular shape in cross-section and a resilient cleaning frame in the form of a coiled wire member 37 having spring coils encircling the body 34 for wiping or scraping contact therewith in an axial direction, there is provided means, such as the weight 38, for distending the member 37. A rotary pump 21, Fig. 1, which constitutes a source of suction is driven from the engine camshaft 22 and discharges in the crankcase 23, its inlet being connected to a suction actuated accessory, such as windscreen wiper 1, by a conduit 15. In conduit 15 is interposed an automatic venting valve 24 which has a through passage 25, Fig. 2, comprising a part of conduit 15, and a venting port 26 opening thereinto which is controlled by valve 27; the port 26 is closed by valve 27 during accessory operation under the action of a spring 28 and opened at other times by a diaphragm 30 through a pin 29. When the accessory motor control valve is in the running position both sides of the diaphragm are acted upon by suction, the underside being open to passage 25 and the top being connected by a conduit 33 to the suction port of the control valve with the result that the spring 28 is free to seat the venting valve 27. When the accessory is inoperative the top of the diaphragm is open to atmosphere through the control valve and the underside of the diaphragm is subjected to sub-atmospheric pressure since the pump continuously operates; the diaphragm therefore moves downwardly and opens the venting valve 27 so permitting air to be drawn in from atmosphere, through the filter 34 (see Group XXVIII), secured to the vent valve casing and discharged into the crankcase, which has a breather, not shown.
