696,756. Generating combustion products under pressure. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. March 2. 1951 [Dec. 6, 1949], No. 31340/49. Class 51(i) [Also in Groups XI and XXVI] A catalytic element is provided in the additional combustion equipment of a gas turbine engine for igniting fuel introduced into the equipment in the region of said element. In after burner apparatus for a jet propulsion plant pilot fuel is supplied through. a conduit 44, Fig. 2, to be discharged from a perforated member 45 and carried downstream into a conical or cylindrical cowl 38 into which some of the fuel stream enters by means of the turbulence caused and is there ignited by a catalytic gauze cylinder 41, e.g. of platinum. The burning pilot fuel ignites the main fuel supplied through a pipe 36 and radial discharge pipes (not shown). The pilot fuel may, alternatively, be injected directly into the cowl 38. The Provisional Specification describes a means of catalytically igniting fuel introduced into the main combustion equipment of a gas turbine engine, and comprising a catalytic element arranged to ignite a gas-air jet which in turn ignites the main fuel which is supplied through atomizing injectors.-
