696,589. Soldering and brazing. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO., Ltd. Nov. 5, 1951 (Nov. 21, 1950], No. 28430/50. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group IX] A composite soldering or brazing insert for use for example in securing a tungsten carbide cutting tip to a steel shank, comprises a woven netting or gauze in which has been incorporated during the weaving thereof at least one wire of solder &c. and/or at least one wire of insert metal insoluble in the solder &c. clad wholly or partly with solder, &c., the remainder being of insert metal wires and/or insert metal wires clad wholly or partly with solder &c. A gauze may be woven from clad insert metal wires only, from these wires with solder &c. wires, from clad insert metal wires and insert metal wires, from insert metal wires and solder &c. wires or from wires of solder &c., insert metal and clad insert metal. The wires of solder &c. or clad with solder &c., may be thicker than the others and the gauze may be hammered or rolled to reduce its thickness. Plain or basket weave may be employed and the solder &c. may be incorporated in the warp and/or weft wires. Flux may be incorporated in the gauze. The insert metal may be iron, mild steel, nickel or molybdenum and the solder &c. may be copper; silver-copper-zinc-cadmium with or without nickel and/or cobalt; silvercopper-zinc ; copper-zinc-nickel; copper-zinc; .copper-manganese or silver-manganese (with or without copper and (or zinc).
