Abstract

696,586. Belt-tensioning devices. BAIGENT, G. M. Sept. 26, 1951 [Sept. 26, 1950; Jan. 29, 1951], Nos. 23551/50 and 2252/51. Class 80 (i). A spring - loaded rectilinearly - moving jockey pulley or sprocket 7 is carried by a flanged member 3 sliding in recessed flanges of a fixed channel-shaped base 1, and is prevented from being moved out of adjustment by two pawls 15 which are housed in holes in the base flanges and aro pressed by a spring wire 17 against staggered racks 11, 12 carried by the member 3. The loading spring 19 is housed in a tube slidable in a bore in the member 3 and acts between the member 3 and one of the two fixed end plates 4. The pawls may be withdrawn by pressing the centre of the spring 17, which is held in position by slots at the corners of the base 1. The racks 11, 12 may be integral with the member 3 or may be mounted in gaps therein, and rubber buffers may be inserted in the gaps to permit small movements of the racks relative to the member. Friction ratchet means may replace the pawls and racks. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the sprocket is mounted on . a pawl - carrying channel - shaped member which slides on a fixed inner member under the influence of a tension spring.
