Abstract

696,369. Supply systems for consumption apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 1, 1950 [May 4, 1949; May 4, 1949 ; Dec. 15, 1949], No. 10668/50. Class 38 (iv). [Also in Group XXXVI] A system for operating an indicating or controlling device in response to an abnormal rise in temperature in a load comprises a sensitive device in the form of a flexible cable (see Group XXXVI), including a conductor forming the load (e.g. the heater wire of a blanket or a winding of an electric machine) and a second conductor, the conductors being bridged by an organic material which is normally non- conductive and of low permittivity but the conductivity and permittivity of which increase with temperature. Protected heating systems for blankets. The current for the heater 11 is controlled by an adjustable thermal interrupter 26 external to the blanket. The system is switched on by a momentary operation of button 32 to connect the supply to a bridge formed by resistors 30, 31, inductor 29 and protective signal wire 14 in series with capacitor 28 which forms a resonant circuit with the inductor. In these conditions a relay 25 connected as a diagonal of the bridge pulls up and completes the supply circuit to the blanket, the supply to the bridge being maintained and resistor 35 being included in the capacitive arm after button 32 is released. A neon indicator 42 glows to show that the blanket is "on". If the blanket is overheated, the resulting change in the sensitive material lowers the impedance between wires 37, 38 and 40 and upsets the tuning of the circuit 28, 29 the current through 25 is reduced and the relay drops out. Deliberate switching off is effected by momentarily short-circuiting 25 by a button 45. Any circuit failure releases 25 by destroying the tuning of 28, 29 to the supply frequency. Specification 619,797, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
