Abstract

696,229. Electric tests. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Oct. 4, 1951 [Oct. 12, 1950], No. 24904/50. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (c)] A pulse amplitude analyser comprises means for plotting the amplitude peaks of an input pulse train as charged areas on a surface the plots being subsequently analysed by scanning them in a series of different amplitude ranges. The Figure shows a pulse amplitude analyser in which in the " record " position shown the input pulse train is applied at 1 via a peak brightener circuit to the grid of a storage cathode-ray tube 6 and also via switch 8 to the Y-deflecting plates 9. The X-plates 12 are connected to a single sweep time base circuit 14 so that a plot of the peaks of the pulses is produced as locally charged areas on the screen of the cathode-ray tube with time-amplitude co-ordinates. At the end of a sweep from timebase 14 a signal is transmitted via lead 35 to change over controller 30 to the " read " position and switches 4, 8, 13 and 19 changeover. The screen of the cathode-ray tube 6 is now scanned in a series of adjacent time-base sweeps each at a different level by the effect of time-base 15 and step-wave generator 11. Pulses are produced on the pick-up plate 17 as each plot made in the recording operation is scanned, these are amplified in unit 18 and fed to gate circuits 20, 20a, &c., each of which is opened sequentially by the step-wave generator 11 so that each channel receives pulses corresponding to pulses lying within a particular amplitude range in the input pulse train. The pulses in each channel are counted by a corresponding counter 21, 21a, &c., and they are also fed to pulse rate circuits 22, 22a, &c., which produce output signals having an amplitude proportion to the pulse rate in that channel. This signal is connected via gate circuits 23, 23a, &c., which are controlled from step-wave generator 11, to the Y-plates 24 of a display cathode-ray tube 25 and X-plates 29 of which are deflected by the step-wave generator 11. Thus the beam of the cathode-ray tube 25 is deflected in steps each of which corresponds to a given amplitude range and the pulse rate in that range is indicated by the Y-plate deflection of the beam. At the end of a " read " operation the generator 11 transmits a signal to change the controller 30 to the " record position.
