A portable washing machine for location in a separate washing container comprises means for producing a directed flow of cleansing liquid in the container extending uniformly substantially for the whole depth of the container, the flow producing means being surrounded by an apertured screen adapted to permit the said flow of liquid therethrough, spaced from the flow producing means and extending upwardly a substantial distance from the bottom of the machine. In Fig. 1 a blade 4 housed within a cage 15 is given rotary oscillation about a shaft 3 by means of a crank and link mechanism 5-9 driven through a worm drive 11 from an electric motor 2 mounted on a base plate 1 which also carries the cage 15 and cover 21. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 a rotary impeller 31 circulates liquid upwardly through a tube 25 having inlet openings 29 and an outlet 30 adjacent a baffle 32 which directs the stream towards the outlet. The tube is contained within and spaced from the cage 15. The embodiments of figs. 1 and 4 are adapted to be secured to a container wall by a U-shaped spring gripping member 19, Fig. 4, which may be mounted to slide vertically with respect to the cage 15 so that the device may be accommodated in containers of varying depth. Another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown) is similar to Fig. 4 but has a tube with an annular outlet, enabling the device to operate centrally within the container. The Provisional Specification states that the agitator may be constructed so as to permit adjustment in height or width or both so as to be accommodated in containers of various sizes and that the agitator may have parts moving laterally, up and down or in any other manner.
