Abstract
694,918. Contacting liquids with gases. GIBBS, Inc., F. S. June 12, 1951 [Feb. 23, 1951], No. 13944/51. Class 55(ii) [Also in Group VI] A method of diffusing a gas in a liquid, wherein the gas is passed through a gas permeable barrier into a body of the liquid flowing in contact with the barrier, the velocity of the liquid being controlled to limit the size of the gas bubbles swept from the barrier. In Fig. 1 a gas-permeable tube 20 formed of electrically fused alumina containing about 90 per cent of aluminium oxide or of sponge metal is held within a cylindrical casing 10 placed in the suction line of a pump for the liquid, and is supplied through a line 32 and control valve 36 with gas from a pressure cylinder or a pressure vessel and compressor or, if air is the gas being diffused, from the atmosphere. A throttling valve 40 comprising, e.g., a flexible diaphragm 41 is placed upstream of the tube 20 to adjust the velocity of liquid flow and to place the liquid flowing past the tube 20 at a negative pressure to assist in the passage of gas through the diffuser. In alternative constructions the gas is admitted to a space 461 Fig. 5 surrounding the gas-permeable tube 20<SP>11</SP> and the liquid is drawn through the tube and in the construction of Fig. 5 by means of vaned members 56, is given a swirling motion about an insert 54 which is provided to increase the velocity of the liquid by virtue of reducing the effective cross-sectional area of the tube. The diffuser may be used in a circulating batch treatment system, Fig. 7, (not shown) or in continuous flow systems without or with provision for recirculation of liquid through a diffuser, Figs. 8 and 9, (not shown).
