Abstract

694,375. Sharpening tobacco machine knives. KORBER, K. Sept. 19, 1950, No. 22952/50. 'Class 60. [Also in Groups I and XXX] The knives 2 of a tobaccocutting machine are ground between each cutting operation by contacting a motordriven cone-shaped grinding wheel 37 carried by a slide which is moved on guides 39 both in the direction of the length of the cutting edge and at right-angles thereto. The wheel is trued at the ends of its traverse by diamonds 44, 45. The grinding wheel slide is reversed automatically at the ends of its traverse by levers 48, 49 which reverse the motor 43 driving the slide and are actuated by an abutment 47 on the carriage. The grinding wheel is fed in to the knife edges by cams 46a, 46b operating a lever 50 having feed-in pawls. Cooling fluid is supplied to the grinding point, and a channel 82 is provided beneath this position to collect the grindings. In a modification; Figs. 4 to 7 (not shown), the grinding wheel is cup-shaped and the axis of its driving motor is disposed at rightangles to the cutting edge.
