Abstract

693,925. Exciting dynamo-electric machines for battery charging. METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Aug. 20, 1951 [Oct. 4, 1950], No. 24267/50. Classes 35 and 38 (iv). [Also in Group XXXVII] The exciter of a battery charging generator for vehicles has a field leakage path, the flux through which is varied by windings to control the output of the exciter, and so regulate the generator output so that it is not overloaded and the battery is not overcharged. The field winding 4 of the generator 1 is fed by the exciter 5 which is preferably of the construction described in Specification 681,403, and in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, carries a pair of current responsive control windings 6, 7 selectively brought into operation by a battery voltage responsive relay 8. During charging, the battery voltage being low, the relay short-circuits winding 7 so that the excitation is controlled in dependence on the generator current in winding 6, thus limiting the generator output to its rated value. When the battery reaches gassing voltage, winding 6 is shortcircuited and the excitation is controlled by the battery current flowing in winding 7 so that the generator current is limited to the load current plus a trickle charge for the battery. In a modified form, the current responsive winding 7 is replaced by a voltage responsive winding connected in series with a resistor across the battery. This winding is shunted by a carbon-pile regulator responsive to the battery voltage. At low battery voltages this winding is virtually short-circuited by the regulator and is inoperative, the winding 6 limiting the generator current as before. At higher voltages the voltage responsive winding becomes operative to limit the battery current. Fig. 2 shows a construction of electromagnet for the relay 8. A permanent magnet armature 13 rotates between a pair of poles 11, 12 whose strength depends on the battery voltage exciting windings 9<SP>1</SP>. At a predetermined voltage the magnetic effect of the windings overcomes that of the armature and causes it to swing round through 180 degrees and so operate the contacts.
