693,092. Measuring-tapes. LJUNGBERG, T. A. Nov. 26, 1951, No. 27676/51. Class 106 (ii). A flexible steel measuring tape 11 of concaveconvex cross-section is coilably received within a casing 1 with a channel-shaped guide near its opening 12 for the tape which slides therein with negligible friction when in its natural concaveconvex shape but when flattened by manually controllable means has its edges urged against the sides of the guide to lock it against sliding. The casing 1 comprises a box and cover with a central stud 8, Fig. 1, having a slot 9 in which is secured one end of a resiliently-coiled winding strip 10 whose other end is fastened to the tape 11 which is extendable through the opening 12. A short flexible steel strip 15 of concave-convex cross-section is attached to the flat upper side. wall 4 of the casing 1 by a screw 13 and rivet 14, Fig. 3, and when not in use is adapted to lie close against the curved side wall 5 of the casing with its free end engaging a pocket 16. Pointed hooks 17, 18 are fastened to the strip 15 and tape 11 and another hook 19 to the casing in line with the others 17, 18. The tape is graduated in inches and centimetres, on one side being calibrated to indicate distances between hooks 17, 18 and on the other distances between hooks 18, 19. Due to the flexibility of the tape 11 and strip 15 the device may readily be inserted in hollow articles for measuring internal dimensions. The looking device comprises a plate 22 with two parallel edges 23 turned upwards and inwards to form a channel-shaped guide for the tape 11 near the opening 12, Figs. 1, 5. The inner end of the plate 22 is fixed to a transverse rotatable shaft 24 and its outer end is fixed to a rod 25 extending downward and urged clockwise by a helical spring 26 which thus causes the plate 22 to press the tape 11 upwards against the rivet 14 and in flattening the tape causes its edges to grip the side of the guide channel. This braking effect is relieved by manually pressing a button 28 to bear on the rod 25. In an alternative locking device the guide 22, 23 is fixed to the casing and a movable member is provided for flattening the tape.
