692,607. Change-speed gear. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AKT.-GES. Nov. 9, 1951 [Nov. 11, 1950], No. 26282/51. Class 80 (ii). In a change-speed and reverse gear, for motor vehicles, of the kind having gear wheels in constant mesh, shiftable clutches allocated to said gears, and a freewheel overrunning clutch 3, 6 transmitting torque in first speed only, the shifting of the clutches and engagement of reverse is effected by a reciprocable operating shaft 2, a sliding reverse gear wheel 10 (which can mesh through an idler with a gear 22 on the driven shaft 25) being connected to a sleeve 8, which engages the first gear speed by sliding on the driving shaft 1 to mesh with teeth 7 on the outer part 6 of the freewheel, a locking bolt 18 being provided between the sleeve and the operating shaft. The operating shaft 2 is formed with a collar 12 and an extension 13, supported by a bush 15 in the bore of the shaft 1, this bush being connected by bolts to the coupling sleeve 8, and having a recess in which is the locking bolt 18 with tapered ends which are engaged alternatively and respectively in recesses in the driving shaft 1 and operating shaft 2, the arrangement being such that when the operating shaft is moved leftwards to engage successively higher speeds, the driving shaft 1 is locked by the bolt 18 and sleeve 8 to the outer part 6 of the freewheel, whereby first speed remains engaged, the freewheel overruns and the reciprocating shaft can slide freely within the bush 15. When the operating shaft 2 is moved to the right from its first speed position, this locking connection is broken by displacement of the bolt 18, and the bush 15 is instead locked to the operating shaft 2, so that first speed is disengaged and the wheel 10 moved to the right to engage reverse.
