Abstract

691,939. Wave-guides. WHITEHEAD, E. A. N. Sept. 28, 1951 [Sept. 28, 1950], No. 23799/50. Class 40 (viii). [Also in Group XL (c)] A variable attenuator for a waveguide comprises two coaxially aligned contiguous lengths 1 and 2 of cylindrical wave-guide, which can be rotated relatively to each other about their common axis, and which contain one or more absorbing surfaces 1a and 2a which absorb substantially completely any wave energy which is electrically polarized in a predetermined direction. The absorbing surfaces may comprise graphite or very thin metal films on dielectric supports. Notches 3 may be cut in the absorbing surfaces to minimize reflections. A further length of guide 6 with an absorbing surface 6a may be fixed beyond the moving section 2 in order that the attenuator may emit waves of the same direction of polarization as those that it receives. Matching sections 1b and 6b are provided at the ends of the attenuator to connect it to rectangular guides and an indicator 5 may be secured to the middle section.
