Abstract
691,675. Treating gases with liquids. FOA, M. May 17, 1949 [June 3, 1948; Jan. 29, 1949]. Nos. 13074/49 and 13075/49. Class 55(ii) Apparatus producing aerosols i.e. suspensions of liquid particles in gas has a stationary downwardly tapering frusto-conical bowl 2 with internal fins 3 at the base. and a rotor 14 shaped substantially as a disc has a downward conical extension with a central axial channel 15 dipping into liquid in the base of the bowl, whereby liquid is drawn up by the rotor and projected centrifugally through radial channels 16 in the disc 14 against the inner wall of a stationary cylinder 8 surrounding.the upper part of the rotor. Air drawn through an inlet 21 by a fan 13 passes down through the cylinder whence the aerosol passes under the edge of the cylinder and rises between the cylinder and the bowl to pass through an annular screen or filter cloth 6 to outlets 22. The lower part of the cylinder 8 may be slotted or perforated at 19, or the cylinder 8 may comprise inclined wall members. An electric motor 10 driving the fan and rotor is mounted on a casing with a flange 9 which is locked by a threaded ring 12 with an elastic gasket 4 against the flange of an outer casing 1. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also a construction as above in which the fan and the cylinder 8 is omitted. Alternatively air is passed through a chamber in which liquid is fed by a pump on to a horizontal rotated disc carrying on its upper side concentric vertical annular perforated walls which break up the liquid. Another apparatus comprises a casing through which air is passed containing a horizontal hollow cylinder with a closed end and a further perforated hollow cylinder within the first cylinder, water being pumped into the inner cylinder, both cylinders being perforated to disperse the liquid. In another form, perforated concentric cylindrical walls are mounted on vertical circular discs rotated in opposite directions on shafts at opposite sides of the casing, the walls on each disc extending between the walls on the other disc. and water is pumped through one shaft into the innermost cylinder. In another form, a casing contains a motor and a water-circulating pump on a horizontal shaft carrying two fans both drawing air from a central spraying device on the shaft. A central disc on the shaft has perforated conical outwardly converging flanges on to which liquid is sprayed from tubular perforated. rings adjacent the shaft, water being thrown from the flanges on to a stationary perforated or slotted annular wall, through which air is drawn inwardly from an inlet at the top of the casing. The moistened air is drawn by the fans through the spray and passes through frusto conical guides and through slotted baffles to an outlet at the side of the casing, excess liquid returning for recirculation to the bottom of the casing. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
