Abstract

691,261. Air and gas heating furnaces. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 22,1951 [June 23,1950], No. 15742/50. Class 64 (i) [Also in Group XXVI] A turbine power plant for burning a low concentration combustible gas-air mixture such as methane in upcast air from coal mines, comprises a blower for supplying the mixture to a combustion chamber having a direct contact regenerative heat-exchanger transferring heat from the exit to the entrance of the combustion chamber and a compressor supplying air, which is at least partly heated in a heat-exchanger in the combustion chamber, to a turbine. In the arrangement shown, upcast air is delivered by a blower 5 to a rotary regenerative heat-exchanger 6 where it is heated before passing over heat-exchanger tubes 8 into the combustion chamber 9. The combustion gases pass over further heat-exchanger tubes 8 and through the rotary heat-exchanger 6 before being .exhausted to atmosphere through pipe 10. Air compressed in the compressor 1 is first heated by turbine exhaust gases in a heat-exchanger 2 and then further heated in tubes 7, 8 before passing to the turbine 4. The plant is controlled by a thermostat 11 in the outlet pipe 14 which controls a valve 12 by-passing the heat-exchanger tubes 7 and 8 and a valve 13 which allows air to enter the upcast air inlet pipe. An increase of temperature will cause the thermostat to open valve 13 and close the valve 12. The thermostat may be placed inside the combustion chamber.9. If desired, the exhaust from the turbine 4 may be cooled in a cooler C and returned to the inlet of the compressor 1. In a modification, the upcast air is preheated in a jacket surrounding the combustion chamber before entering the rotary heatexchanger. In a further modification, upcast air instead of atmospheric air is fed to the compressor. After being heated in the tubes surrounding the combustion chamber, this air is burnt in a second combustion chamber having a second rotary regenerative heat-exchanger transferring heat from its exit to its entrance and then passed to the turbine. In this arrangement, the controlling thermostat may be placed at the outlet of the second combustion chamber.
