Abstract

A zinc-base alloy of high wear-resistance has the following composition:-Ni 0.16-3.0 per cent; Ti 0.04-0.8 per cent; Al 2.0-5.0 per cent; Cu 0.5-5.0 per cent; Zn, and impurities, the remainder. The alloy may also contain Mg 0.03-0.4 per cent. The Cu, Ni and Ti constituents may be added to a Zn-rich melt in the form of a Cu-Ni-Ti alloy hardener which may contain Cu 45-90 per cent, Ni 8-40 per cent and Ti 2-15 per cent and which may be made by melting Cu, adding Ni and then adding commercially pure Ti while protecting the melt with an inert atmosphere. In forming the Zn alloy, commercially pure Zn is melted, the Al is added and the hardener alloy is added while the melt is at a temperature between 1100-1300 DEG F. Alternatively the Al may be added in two equal portions, one before and one after the hardener. The melt may then be fluxed, e.g. with ammonium chloride after which Mg may be added if required.
