Abstract

The tendency of textile materials consisting wholly or mainly of regenerated cellulose to shrink or pull out is prevented by impregnating the materials with an aqueous medium having a pH of 1.2 to 6.5 and containing a water-insoluble, alkali-soluble cellulose ether, e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose, a water-soluble substance, e.g. formaldehyde, glyoxal or a melamine-formaldehyde precondensate or the constituents thereof, which is convertible by heat under acidic conditions to an insoluble resinous condition, a strong mineral acid and an alkali metal salt of the mineral acid, removing excess medium, drying and then heating the impregnated material. The aqueous medium is prepared by mixing the cellulose ether and the heat-convertible substance with an aqueous solution of sodium, potassium or lithium hydroxide and then adding the mineral acid, e.g. sulphuric acid. Impregnation, drying and heating may be effected with the materials under tension, drying being preferably effected at 200-240 DEG F., and heating at 300-350 DEG F., the latter operation being preferably effected by blowing with hot air. The drying and heating operations are effected in the absence of pressure. To the aqueous medium plasticizers, e.g. ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, the partial esters of sorbitol, mannitol, glycerol or glycol with stearic, oleic, myristic or lauric acid or a mixture of sorbitan monopalmitate and sorbitan tristearate which has been condensed with ethylene oxide, may be added.
