Abstract

690.693. Furnace electrodes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ADAMS, O., MANNERS, M., and PARTRIDGE, J. H. Jan. 3, 1951 [Jan. 3, 1950], No. 135/50. Class. 39(iii) An immersion electrode for heating baths of conducting liquid, e.g. in glass melting or salt bath furnaces, comprises a rigid assembly consisting of a plurality of refractory metal wires, rods, or strips 3, and a rigid refractory framework 13, 14,. 15. As shown the electrode comprises a plurality of tungsten wires 3 welded to circular strips of molybdenum sheet 6, 7 and the support comprises a molybdenum rod 13 to which are attached two molybdenum sheet discs 14, 15 welded to the wires 3. The rod 13 is inserted in a recess 16 in a water-cooled copper block 17 to which a current supply lead 12 is welded. A ceramic tube 22 partially surrounds the block 17 to prevent oxidation. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the wires 3 are mounted on a ceramic tube, and may be formed by a tungsten helix of wire or strip or by longitudinally arranged wires or rods. The metals tungsten, molybdenum, platinum, iridium, and rhodium are interchangeable in the construction.
