June 18,1948 [Feb. 5, 1948], No. 16468/48 Class 64 (i) [Also in Groups XII and XXIX] In a fluid-heating or other furnace having a gastight wall enclosing an elongated combustion chamber in which a fuel substance is burnt in a combustionsupporting substance, one of these substances is introduced into the chamber in successive fractions along the chamber through channels passing through its wall, and the other substance is introduced into a part of the chamber from which it flows past the channel outlets near which combustion occurs, and temperature-sensitive means subject to temperatures in the combustion zones control the output of each channel so that the temperatures are kept below a predetermined value. In a fluid heater, Fig. 1, in which air or other fluid to be heated flows successively through tubes 3, 7, the whole of the combustion air is supplied to the combustion chamber 29 through a pipe 10, and the gaseous fuel is supplied in successive fractions to burners 12, 13, 14, 15, &c, along the flow path of the hot gases around the tubes. Alternatively, all the fuel is introduced at once and the air in successive fractions. In a modification, the fluid to be heated flows around the tubes, which form elongated combustion chambers. The supply of gaseous fuel or air to the burners or inlets 12, 13 &c. is controlled by three-way valves, which may be controlled by servo-motor systems (see Group XXIX) operated by temperature responsive elements located in the heating or heated fluid or in the wall of a tube 7 or in the wall of the casing of the heater.
