Abstract
690,221. Delivering powder in measured quantities. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. July 5, 1950 [July 28, 1949], No. 19824/49. Class 106 (v) [Also in Group XVII] In apparatus in which powder is fed from a hopper to a succession of measuring pockets in turn and the successive charges are discharged from the pockets into a succession of containers, each pocket is constituted by a tubular sleeve of flexible material, e.g. fabric or rubber, and means are provided for collapsing the sleeve at a position intermediate its length to allow it to hold a charge of powder, release of the collapsing means being effective to discharge the charge of powder into a container. As shown, powder 11 flows from a supply pipe 12 into a collecting chamber 13 from which it passes through apertures 14 in a rotatable wheel 16 into subsidiary hoppers constituted by flanged extensions 17 of the wheel and the upper portions of a series of flexible sleeves 18 attached thereto. The chamber 13 is arranged in an annular channel 26 in the wheel and forms with the base thereof an enclosed space through which the subsidiary hoppers pass in succession. The forward wall of the chamber acts as a scraper for the base of the channel, and auxiliary scrapers 25, Fig. 2 (not shown), are provided for sweeping any surplus powder back into the chamber 13. The wheel 16 is carried by a series of pillars 27 extending upwardly from a chain wheel 28 which drives a chain conveyer 24 for cartons 23 to be filled. An adjusting wheel 33 arranged below the wheel 16 is formed with bosses 34 slidable on the pillars and with a central hub 36 supported by a thrust bearing 37 carried by a sleeve 38 making threaded engagement with a rotatable adjusting shaft 41. The wheel 33 carries a series of pairs of gripping members 42 and 43, one pair for each subsidiary hopper, pivoted at 44 and 46 respectively in brackets 47 and 48 and operated by arms 49 formed with arcuate racks 51. The arm 49 operating the gripper 42 is part of a twoarmed lever 49, 52 coupled by a spring toggle member 53 to a two-armed lever 56 pivoted at 54 on the bracket 47, the lever 56 carrying rollers 57, 58 arranged to engage stationary cams on the main framework of the apparatus whereby the gripping members are opened and closed at intervals to release or collapse the sieeves. The lower ends of the sleeves are secured to spring-loaded closure plates 63 against which the cartons are pressed during the filling operation. The shaft 41 is rotatable through worm gearing 76 by a shaft 74 to raise or lower the wheel 33, thus varying the position at which the sleeves are collapsed and the capacity of the subsidiary hoppers. The shaft 74 may be rotated manually, or automatically as described in Specification 686,906. Specification 690,215 also is referred to.
