Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises lubricating oil, an oil soluble alkaline earth metal salt of a sulphonic acid of molecular weight between 300 and 600, a water soluble alkaline earth metal salt of a carboxylic acid having not more than 6 carbon atoms, and either a water soluble alkaline earth metal 1-6 carbon atoms or a lead salt of a carboxylic acid having not more than 6 carbon atoms. The high molecular weight sulphonates may be derived from aromatic compounds such as benzene, toluene or xylene alkylated with olefins or olefin polymers such as polypropylene or polyisobutylene; alkyl sulphonates may also be used. Low molecular sulphonates referred to are methane, ethane and propane sulphonates. The carboxylate and the lead salt may be salts of formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, oxalic, furoic or lactic acids. Mineral or synthetic lubricating oils may be used. In one example, a grease comprises 10 parts by weight strontium sulphonate, 5 parts calcium acetate, 3.5 parts ethanesulphonic acid, 1.5 parts lime and 85 parts mineral oil. This grease was compared with a conventional grease comprising sulphurized fatty oil in a lithium base grease. The preparation of the greases is described.
