Abstract

g -Sulphonyl carboxylic acids are made by reacting aliphatic g -lactones at elevated temperatures up to about 250 DEG C. with salts of sulphinic acids, and acidifying the reaction product. In examples, g -butyrolactone in excess is heated with (1) benzene sulphinic acid sodium salt; (2) p-toluene sulphinic acid sodium salt; (3) the mixture of sulphinic acid sodium salts obtained by reducing with zinc dust and hydrochloric acid and neutralizing with caustic soda the mixture of sulphochlorides obtained by the action of a mixture of sulphur dioxide and chlorine or a mixture of paraffins of boiling range 250-320 DEG C. The sodium salts first obtained are converted to the acids by treatment with dilute hydrochloric acid. The calcium, zinc, or potassium salts of sulphinic acids may also be used, and other sulphinic acids referred to are the halogen or alkoxy substitution products of benzene sulphinic acid, and methyl-, ethyl-, butyl-, decyl-, or cycloalkyl-sulphinic acids.
