Abstract

A method of casting Pd or an alloy containing at least 85 per cent Pd comprises heating the Pd or alloy, which is substantially free from P and Si, to a temperature not more than 400 DEG F above its melting point whilst protecting it by a non-oxidizing atmosphere, deoxidizing with W and/or Mo and casting it into a refractory mould. The Pd-alloy may contain any of the precious metals except Os e.g. 95.5 per cent Pd, 4.5 per cent Ru. The melting may take place in an inert atmosphere, e.g. of Ar or He, with injections of a reducing gas e.g. H2 or coal gas, to prevent oxidation of the W and Mo. If W alone is used for deoxidising, it should be at least 0.25 per cent by weight of the Pd or alloy, and if Mo alone is used 0.12 per cent. If both are used, the percentage of Mo plus half the percentage of W is at least 0.12 per cent of the weight of the Pd or alloy. The Pd or alloy may be pre-treated for the removal of Si by melting under oxidizing conditions, and deoxidising treatment carried out in a crucible having a lining containing not more than 0.5 per cent Si which has been treated for the surface removal of Si. A suitable crucible comprises a shell of fine clay and sand lined with cement of fused alumina, 5 per cent of a clay binder and 0.5 per cent silica. This was dried and heated to about 2500 DEG F for 2 hours.
