Abstract

689,312. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. GLENNY, A. P., SPENCER, D. L., and SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd. March 31, 1950 [April 11, 1949], No. 9777/49. Class 135. A hydraulic servo-control system applicable, e.g. to an automatic system for controlling the direction of flight or the attitude of an aircraft, comprises a power piston 4 connected to a control surface of the aircraft, the opposite sides of the piston being interconnected through a by-pass controlled by a ball valve 11, and the opposite ends of the cylinder 1 connected through pipes 2, 3 to a pressure liquid supply valve 6. The pipe 3 has a waste ball valve 10. Thus, if the supply through the pipe 3 fails the valve 11 opens the by-pass and the valve 10 opens to connect the lower end of the cylinder to waste. The flow of pressure liquid to the pipe 2 is regulated by a control valve 7 connected by a wire 7a to a pulley 8 mounted upon a shaft connected to a constantly-driven motor through an electromagneticallycontrolled friction clutch, the current to which is regulated according to the deviation of the aircraft from its desired position. When the valve 7 is raised, pressure liquid flows to the upper end of the cylinder and moves the piston downwards by virtue of the greater area of the upper side of the piston exposed to liquid pressure. Downward movement of the valve 7 opens the upper end of the cylinder to waste and, when the supply of pressure liquid fails, permits manual operation of the power piston 4. The sectional area of the piston rod may be about one-half of that of the piston. In a modification, a by-pass between the opposite sides of the piston is provided by arranging a definite clearance between the piston and the cylinder and providing the piston with a groove for a rubber sealing ring. This construction permits manual operation of the piston.
