Abstract

A detergent composition is made by dissolving sodium carboxymethylcellulose in water in a proportion of 1-12 per cent, adding a sodium alkylbenzenesulphonate, as specified below, to the solution in a proportion of 2.5-100 parts per part of sodium carboxymethylcellulose, heating the mixture, and then drying it to solid form, e.g. on a drum or by spray-drying. The sodium alkylbenzenesulphonate is obtained by sulphonating and neutralizing the product obtained by condensing a hydrocarbon of the benzene series, e.g. benzene, toluene or xylene, with a petroleum fraction boiling within the range 150-300 DEG C. The sulphonates may be taken in purified form or as the crude neutralization product containing sodium sulphate. The sodium carboxymethylcellulose also may be a crude or purified product. Inorganic salts may be added to the composition, e.g. soda, sodium bicarbonate, mixtures thereof, trisodium phosphate and sodium metasilicate. Examples are given. Specification 688,752, [Group III], and U.S.A.
