Abstract

688,550. Separating gas mixtures. BRITISH OXYGEN CO.. Ltd. June 29, 1951 [March 29, 1950], No. 7887/50. Class 8 (ii). A process for separating a gas mixture e.g., air into a lower boiling point fraction e.g., nitrogen and at least one fraction of higher boiling point e.g., oxygen in a rectification column 3 comprises cooling compressed air in nitrogen regenerator 2a, 2b to provide saturated vapour of which at least part is condensed by heat exchange with boiling oxygen e.g., in a coil at the base of the column 3, expanding at a valve 5 and vaporising at an exchanger 6 at least part of the liquid air in heat exchange with effluent nitrogen from the column 3 to provide reflux therefor, re-compressing the expanded and vaporised air to at least atmospheric pressure e.g. by a turbo-compressor 8, cooling e.g., in oxygen regenerators 7a, 7b, 9a, 9b and expanding at a turbine 11 to provide gaseous feed to the column 3. In a modification a condenser is substituted for the vaporisor 6 and is mounted on top of the column 3, and in either of the above processes part of the liquid air is expended into the column as liquid feed before traversing the valve 5.
