In a liquid level control of the kind desclosed in Specification 688,462, the proportional band setting is adjustable by the inclusion of a variable gain amplifier. The amplifier comprises a valve 154, the grid voltage of which is controlled by a bridge consisting of photo-electric cells 162, 163, and the two halves of a resistor 170. The balance of the bridge (determined by the relative illumination of the cells) is controlled by a light shield 160 carried by a moving coil instrument having coils 150, 152. Under normal balanced conditions, the anode current of valve 154 flowing in coil 152 is equal to the error signal current in coil 150. The gain of the amplifier is controlled by adjustably shunting these coils by a potentiometer 181. Movement of the slider to the left increases the shunting of coil 152 and decreases the shunting of coil 150 thereby increasing the sensitivity of the system ; and vice versa. The signal current in coil 150 is derived from a floatcontrolled valve 7 together with integral and differential components derived from valve 122 in the manner disclosed in Specification 688,462. The correcting current in coil 152 also flows in the coil of a relay 38 controlling a reversible servomotor 39 correctively operating the drain valve V. The motor is stabilized by a followup connection back to the arm of the relay 38 via gearing 45, 46, and a spring 48. In order to set the zero position of a coil 108 (controlling the valve 122) a constant current of predetermined value is passed through it from a current control system. This includes in series with the supply from rectifier 193, a valve 190 and a coil 194 which operates contacts 195, 198, 199 to correctively control the grid voltage of the valve.
