A chuck has a mantle rotatable on a cylindrical bearing surface with respect to the nose of the shank, a cast member or members housed in and rotatable with the mantle and presenting grooves or slots co-operating with the inner surface of the mantle to guide the jaws axially and radially, a screw-thread formed on the nose or on a member secured thereto and a pusher member in threaded engagement with the screwthread, springs to retract the jaws and urge their inner ends towards the opposite end of the pusher, and means associated with the pusher for transmitting rotary movement to the pusher upon rotation of the mantle. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pusher 8 is in screwthreaded engagement with the nose 9 of the taper shank 2 and is actuated by a stamped cruciform member 6 having projections 5 engaging recesses 4 in a rotatable, but not axially movable, cylindrical member 1. The jaws are guided by cast members 11 mounted in the mantle 3. The jaws have lateral projections engaging in complementary grooves 16 in the members 11, and return springs 17 bearing on the lateral projections are housed in the grooves. In a modification, Fig. 12, the pusher 32 is in screw-threaded engagement with the interior of a fixed member 23 force-fitted on the taper mounting 24 and the jaws 31 are guided in slots 30 provided in a rotatable, but not axially movable, member 22 mounted in a mantle 28. Return-springs 34 are mounted at one end on pins 35, located in holes in the jaws and slidable on relieved portions 40 of the member 22, and at the other end on a ring 37 fixed in a peripheral groove 38 in the member 22.
