Abstract
Aldehydes or ketones are produced by the dehydrogenation of primary or secondary alcohols by passing the vapour of a saturated primary or secondary alcohol over a dehydrogenation catalyst at a temperature of from 200 DEG to 300 DEG C. and at a pressure below 300 mm. Hg. Suitable alcohols to use as starting materials are, for example, ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, 2-ethylhexyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, secondary butyl alcohol, methyl isobutyl carbinol, cyclohexanol, methyl cyclohexanol, phenyl-ethyl alcohol and guaniol. Any dehydrogenation catalyst may be used. The preferred catalyst is reduced copper deposited on a carrier, preferably kieselguhr, in association with another metal or a metallic oxide if desired. In the examples (a) ethyl alcohol is converted into acetaldehyde with some acetic acid and ethyl acetate as by-products; (b) isopropyl alcohol is converted into acetone; (c) ethylhexyl alcohol is converted into ethylhexaldehyde; and (d) cyclohexanol is converted into cyclohexanone. Specifications 636,743 and 636,800 are referred to.
