Abstract
686,618. Uniting by fusion. METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 21, 1950 [Dec. 31, 1949], No. 23192/50. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XI] A hand torch for gas shielded arc welding having a nozzle - ended welding head at an angle to a tubular handle carrying leads for supplying current to an electrode in the head and conduits for supplying gas and cooling fluid, is provided with a guide tube for flexible filler wire extending along the handle and head and a feed mechanism mounted in an enclosure on the handle to counterbalance the welding head weight. In an embodiment the torch comprises a handle 2 supporting at one end a fluid-cooled gasshielded electrode welding head 3 substantially as described in Specification 672,081, and at the other end a housing 5 containing filler wire feed mechanism. By means of a knurled wheel 6, Fig. 4, driven by a flexible shaft 13 from a remote motor 19 and cooperating with a free roller 8, feed wire 7 is fed from a reel 22 mounted adjacent the motor 19, through a flexible tube 23 and into an " L "-shaped guide tube 4 fixed to the handle 2 and head 3, to emerge into the arc. The tip of the tube 4 is bent practically at right angles to the plane of the remainder of the tube 4 and is separate therefrom being secured to the detachable nozzle 33 and joined to the tube 4 by a short rubber connector 53. A rheostat 27 is mounted on the housing 5 and is connected by leads 28 to a thyratron speed control 26 for the shunt motor 19. The tube 23 and shaft 13 are combined with gas and fluid supply tubes within a flexible sheathing 50. Current supply to the electrode is by way of a conductor threaded through one of the cooling fluid tubes. An air motor may be employed.
